Food scraps that are trashed contribute to climate change. On the other hand, food scraps that are composted return vital nutrients to our soils.

Learn how East Hampton Compost, a collaboration between ReWild Long Island and the Town of East Hampton started — and how you can start one in your own community.

Founded by ReWild Board member Gloria Frazee, East Hampton Compost is a community food scrap drop-off program that launched with a 12-week pilot in the summer of 2023.

The key goals were to educate residents about the importance of transforming food scraps into soil food and which scraps are compostable. They also wanted to show that community members would actively participate.

And it worked!

  • They received nearly 2,800 lbs of scraps at two Saturday farmers market locations, one in Springs and the other in Sag Harbor.

  • The tables were staffed by community volunteers, including a group of enthusiastic high school interns from the ReWild Summer Program.

  • Contamination rates decreased over the summer.

  • Participants are asking for a year-round program with additional drop-off days.
